Acquiring a medical marijuana card in Maryland can require some patience, but the process is easier than it seems. The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) accepts applications online, but it is essential to have all required information ready to upload before starting the process.
Editor’s note: There is currently no age requirement, but the process does differ for adult and minor patients. We will speak to registering as an adult here, but if you are interested in the registration for minor patients under 18 years of age, you can find the steps here.
Read through these steps to register as a Medical Marijuana patient in Maryland and you’ll be able to legally medicate in no time.
First: Do You Qualify for Medical Marijuana in Maryland?
You need to determine if you qualify to register with the MMCC. As with any medication, you’ll need a reason to take medical cannabis. If you are a Maryland resident (with proof of residency) and have at least one of the following conditions diagnosed by a doctor, chiropractor, or medical professional, you qualify:
- Wasting syndrome
- Severe pain
- Severe nausea
- Severe or persistent muscle spasms
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Chronic pain
If you don’t have any of these but have a severe condition where other medical treatments haven’t been effective, and symptoms are expected to be relieved by marijuana, it is worth speaking to a physician about it.
While some physicians may be not well versed in medical marijuana, there are many registered providers who want to facilitate the safe use of marijuana to relieve symptoms and improve your quality of life. Some other common conditions include depression, anxiety, cancer, migraines, and insomnia.
Non-Residents May Also Be Eligible
If you are a non-Maryland resident receiving medical treatment in Maryland, you are eligible to register as a patient, but are required to provide the address and contact name for the Maryland medical facility where you are receiving treatment. With Maryland having many renowned medical centers, such as Johns Hopkins, this is a big deal! A win for prospective MMJ patients.
Second: Gather Your Required Information
Before you start your registration, it is important to note that the online application form must be completed and submitted in one session; you will not be able to save and complete the application at a later time. It is critical that you have the required information and documents in an electronic format ready for upload when starting the process. This includes:
- A valid, accessible email account you are comfortable using in relation to your Maryland Medical Cannabis account
- The last four digits of your Social Security Number
- An electronic copy of a valid US government-issued photo ID and proof of Maryland address. If you need more details regarding types of IDs accepted or if your address does not match what is on your ID, learn more on the MMCC website here.
- An electronic copy of a clear photograph taken within the last six (6) months. You can easily use one of the many free passport photo apps available in the App Store or Google Play Store.

Third: Register as a Patient with the MMCC
Now that you have all of your information ready, you may head to the MMCC Registry website and click ‘Create Account’ under the Patients heading. Complete and submit an online application. Please note that you do not need to submit any medical records at this point. This is simply to get your information into their system.
As soon as you complete and submit your online application, you will receive a verification email and you must click the link to verify your account. Without this step, your application is not complete and will not be reviewed by MMCC.
Finally: Wait Patiently
Completed applications are reviewed MMCC and you will receive a follow up email advising whether or not your application has been approved. The MMCC has a high volume of applications and they recommend waiting to call or email only if it has been more than 45 days since submission of your initial application. Some people see a turnaround of 5 days, some have waited the full 45 days, but don’t worry, your time will come. Keep an eye on that email inbox!
You Received Email Approval, Now What?
Woohoo! You received your email saying your application has been approved. Now that you are officially registered with MMCC and have your Patient ID Number, you are ready to visit a MMCC registered physician to obtain a valid written certification.
You can find a registered physician near you through the following:
Nervous to talk to someone about this? Don’t be – these physicians have all opted in to be a registered provider with the state to make it easier for you to access medical marijuana. The physician will process the medical paperwork electronically with the MMCC and provide you with a written certification. You are now ready to visit a licensed Maryland dispensary to purchase medical cannabis!
Time to Visit a Dispensary
You will need to provide that valid written certification, your ID, and your Patient ID Number when visiting a licensed dispensary to purchase your medical marijuana. You are also eligible to purchase a patient ID card for a fee of $50 if you want to have a physical card. While that may make it easier to sign into various dispensaries, it is completely optional. Additionally, you must use your certification to purchase medical cannabis within 120 days of issuance or it will become null and void.
